Sonita Alizadeh (born in 1996 in Herat, Afghanistan)
is a rapper and activist. Sonita was supposed to be married off at the age of ten, but the arrangement fell apart when her family had to flee to Iran. Her song Daughters for Sale went viral on YouTube.
The attention brought her to the USA, where she is currently residing and continues to advocate for girls’ right to determine their own destiny. In 2015, Sonita was named one of Foreign Policy Magazine’s ‘Global Thinkers,’ and BBC recognized her as one of the ‘100 Women of the Year 2015’.
